Call for Papers and Special Session Organization

Theme

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce that the UMTIK 2026 – 21st International Conference on Machine Design and Production will be held from 19–21 August 2026, hosted by the Presidency of İstanbul Technical University (ITU) in Istanbul, Türkiye.

This prestigious event will take place at the Gümüşsuyu Campus of ITU, a location chosen for its historical significance and vibrant cultural setting. İstanbul Technical University, founded in 1773 as Mühendishâne-i Bahrî-i Hümâyûn by Sultan Mustafa III, is one of the oldest technical universities in the world, with a longstanding legacy of excellence in engineering and innovation.

Istanbul, a city that bridges continents, contributes approximately 30% of Türkiye’s economy and is part of the Istanbul–İzmit industrial corridor, one of the nation’s key economic regions. As the second most visited city globally, Istanbul offers an inspiring backdrop for academic exchange and collaboration.

We look forward to welcoming researchers, scholars, and industry leaders from around the world to this landmark event in one of the most dynamic and historically rich cities on Earth.

Tutorial (In Turkish)

UMTIK 2026 will host a half-day tutorial on metrology, its role in production, and its applications on machine tools.

Metrology: Its Role in Production and Applications on Machine Tools

Date 18 August 2026, Tuesday
Venue Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Gümüşsuyu, İnönü Cd. No:65, 34437 Beyoğlu/Istanbul, Türkiye
Certificate UMTIK 2026 Tutorial Participant Certificate

Metrology, the science of measurement, is an enabling technology for fundamental research and innovation in all disciplines. Accurate and reliable measurement is necessary in every area of daily life, including industry, science and policy.

With the development of the defence industry in Türkiye, measurement requirements once mainly requested from calibration laboratories are now also expected from aerospace, space and defence industry companies for product measurements. Requirements arising from AS9001/AS9100 and NADCAP standards have made it increasingly important for production personnel to strengthen their metrology culture and to become metrology-literate during procurement processes.

This tutorial has been prepared for UMTIK participants by first introducing fundamental metrology concepts and then presenting selected examples and applications from machine-tool metrology. Its purpose is to support organizations involved in the production chain, improve production quality, reduce costs and contribute to the development of the country’s technological infrastructure.

Detailed Tutorial Program Download
Who can participate?
  • Personnel from companies manufacturing in all sectors, especially aerospace, space and defence industries: production managers, designers, R&D and product-development personnel
  • Machine-tool users and operators
  • Machine-tool maintenance and repair units of organizations
  • Testing, calibration and measurement laboratories
  • Quality managers and personnel, including AS9001/AS9100, NADCAP and ISO 17025 practitioners
  • AS9001/AS9100 and NADCAP auditors
  • ISO 17025 auditors
  • Machine-tool manufacturers
  • Machine-tool sales representatives, maintenance staff and installation staff
Expected learning outcomes
  • Learning basic metrology concepts for measuring devices and machine tools, including resolution, repeatability, accuracy, traceability, uncertainty and accreditation
  • Learning and using the international metrology system
  • Reading and interpreting certificates of measuring devices and machine tools, and understanding how to use the data in these certificates
  • Selecting measuring devices or measurement services according to part tolerances, including accredited and non-accredited options
  • Verifying measurements performed during production
  • Identifying basic machine-tool errors quickly or through detailed investigation, and understanding calibration and performance control as well as the differences between them
  • Recognising the references and standards used for machine-tool calibration and performance control
Objectives and certificate

A half-day training cannot cover every aspect of metrology, which includes several specialized areas and many training components. However, based on these fundamentals, the tutorial aims to help companies and organizations understand how to address production needs, interpret tender requirements, evaluate their own capabilities and guide future investments. Operators and maintenance personnel working with machine tools will also gain more detailed knowledge and work more consciously. Examples are prepared specifically through machine-tool metrology for UMTIK conference participants.

Participants attending the tutorial will receive a UMTIK 2026 Tutorial Participant Certificate.
